Cool Blue Flag Used to I.D. Squadron and Auxiliary Vessel Examiners
To help boaters locate a Vessel Safety Examiner for a free equipment check
at the marina or launch ramp, USPS and USCGA Vessel examiners will be flying
a new distinctive blue, swallow-tail pennant marked red with the letters
“VE”. The flag will be displayed on the water, at boat shows , launch
ramps, marine store parking areas or wherever a certified examiner is
available to conduct or schedule Vessel Safety Checks.
Boat owners are encouraged by the U.S. Coast Guard and local marine law
enforcement agencies to have a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) performed on
their boat this Spring or early Summer prior to hitting the water.
VSCs are performed by vessel examiners, who are members of the United
States Power Squadrons (USPS) or the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Ron LaPlante, in charge of Vessel Safety Check programs for USPS noted “The
free vessel exam covers federal and state required items required aboard a
pleasure craft . La Plant also stated that sixteen other safety and “on
the water” items and techniques are also inspected or discussed
Boaters can also go to the internet, a great way to contact the Squadron or
the Auxiliary and make arrangements to have a free Vessel Safety Check
performed in the water or on the trailer. Just log onto the USPS/USCGA web

“A simple three step process is all that is needed” said LaPlant. “Just
Enter the Zip Code nearest the vessel location. and send an Email with
request information to the nearest examiner to set up an appointment for
this important free safety check. Contact is only a few clicks away.”
“The VSC program is effective as a marine business sponsored event” noted
Tom Roscoe, a USPS Vessel examiner in New Hampshire. “More inspections
occur and it can be a great community event“. Roscoe suggests, “Marina
dock-masters and owners, yacht clubs, marine stores, insurance agencies and
other boating groups should arrange to conduct safety days or safety
weekends for their customers or members. People come to the stores for an
inspection and often purchase the needed equipment that has gone out of date
or is missing. This is a win - win arrangement for the business as well as
the examiners and results in safer boats and happier boaters”.
LaPlante reported, “Squadrons already are planning and scheduling events.
Last year in Michigan, along one mile of shoreline, we inspected 526 boats
in one weekend. This was a combined team effort supported by USPS and the
Auxiliary” .
