George -- In a LARGE nutshell, you have hit the nail pretty close to
the head. We began without cell phones, no TV (color no less) in at
least three or four rooms, Mom was home, Dad was at work...

New world folks. Eliminating the " entrance exam" ain't gonna' drive
them to our door..

Either they are excited about USPS ( or ANY other ) organization, or
they ain't ...

However, that does not mean we do not give up trying to get them
excited about USPS... we must find the magic... ( Seavester is working
hard at that )

Subject: [Psml] membership

I have noticed in the past few years that very few people want to "join"
any
organization...regardless of race, religion, creed, or place of national
origin, to coin a phrase. with the diversity of all the things "younger"
members have access to, Boating doesn't seem "high" on their priority
list!
Usually its the "husband/Father" that determines the list of things to
get
involved with. I can say Thank GOD, a lot of "farther" have chosen to
involved themselves with there children...predominately....In my day...
Dad's "brought home the bacon" and had a little interaction with there
children. It was mostly up to the wife. Today its just not "Soccer Mom's"
that contribute to the cost of a boat, the cost of maintenance, the cost
of
fuel, ALL help to KILL boating off to only the most ardent of people.
The
"dyed in the wool" member is going to be here for the long haul...DO
EVERYTHING you can do to keep them! There will ALWAYS be the people that
..join..and have know idea what they are getting into. they cant
understand...don't rely, or want to get involved..and only expect that
some
"service" is "due" them, and will not renew the next year. Think about
it...If they are NOT dinging anything for your local org.. are they
"supportive"....sure we could all use their "dues" but don't we need
their
"help" too?..I know a few Squadrons that have very many "well healed"
members that do not volunteer for anything. its NOT just the money, life
is
more important than that.
USPS, Districts, and Local Squadrons....MUST...show HOW important USPS
is.
what we can DO for them...as this seems to be there big concern....WHAT
CAN
YOU DO FOR ME!... Lets face it..WE the older group...Dotted on our
children!!! we gave them everything WE couldn't afford...but now its a
matter of "what else can you give me?...I don't want to "WORK" for
anything...were are you when I'm failing? what can your 30+ experience
and
connections do for me?..I need thousands of dollars year to cover my
expenses...don't you have it?/what good are you if you don't? I'm glad
for
the few that can say "my kids didn't ask for anything" FANTASTIC good
for
you...BUT in this day and age an 18-25 year old...depending on the area
of
the country....has to "fend for himself" it AIN'T easy!...So joining a
"volunteer organization" is NOT on there priority list!
