Lt/C Karl Peters make an excellent point regarding the value of membership.
As an example, I recently joined the Royal Yacht Association (RYA) the
British equivalent of our USPS. I was able to join by simply paying the membership
fee. No test, no recommendation by a RYA member. No membership pin and
swearing in as a new member. Just pay and you are a member. For the membership
fee, I received the magazine subscription and the discounts that the RYA receive
from various vendors.
I joined the RYA so that I could compare and contrast how and what USPS does
versus the RYA. It is too soon to provide any opinions, but one thing I can
say is that being a member of an organization which has certain requirements
such as the USPS seems to be of MORE value to everyone in the organization.
I have a USPS ensign and a squadron burgee which I proudly fly on my boat
and identify with and which others recognize. I have no sense of membership
with RYA, at least yet.
So membership should be more than just pay the yearly membership dues.
