Dana et al,
Saybrook Power Squadron has set up a working relationship with a new
Sea Scout Ship in our area (Ship #48 sponsored by The Connecticut
River Museum, Essex Ct.).
Four scouts and their two leaders took and passed our Basic Boating
course last fall and all joined the our Squadron. Two scouts and both
leaders have since taken and passed Seamanship.
We are looking to have these scouts assist us as 'aides' in our
Vessel Safety Check program once the water gets 'soft' again, and are
looking at other ways to get them actively involved in squadron
functions. We also hope to get one, or both, leaders on our Executive
Committee to facilitate coordination, even though we also have an
appointed liaison to the ship.
We are also pursuing other avenues to involve the scouts, and/or to
tweak their interests, such as helping to 'localize' some of our
PowerPoint presentations (i.e. for the Boating Course) and
introducing them to amateur radio (local emergency services operates
in building next door to our HQ room).
We will be handing out Sea Scout literature to any youngsters in our
present and future Boating courses, which may help in bolstering the
ranks of both our groups.
