Distinguished Eagle Scout Award
[Jacksonville, Florida. 24 February 2007] At the Annual Meeting of
the UNITED STATES POWER SQUADRONS, here, C/C Ernest G. Marshburn, SN,
of Greenville, North Carolina, was presented with the Distinguished
Eagle Scout Award.
Distinguished Eagle Scout Ernest Marshburn was recognized for his
achievements as a university administrator, and for his distinguished
service to his community and nation as Director, Strategic
Initiatives, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate
Studies, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. In
addition, he has distinguished himself by his assent over many years
to his current position as head of the UNITED STATES POWER SQUADRONS,
a private non-profit organization of over 50,000 members, dedicated
since 1914 to boating safety education. Mr. Marshburn has also been
involved with Children Miracle Network Telethon, Literacy Volunteers,
United Way, and East Carolina University Pirate Club. He is also a
member of the National Venturing Committee, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.
The award is granted by the Board of Regents of the National Eagle
Scout Association, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA. An Eagle Scout may only be
nominated for the award a minimum of twenty-five years after achieving
the rank of Eagle.
First created in 1969, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award has been
presented to fewer than 1,600 of over 1.8 million Eagle Scouts (since
1912) in the United States of America. Distinguished Eagle Scouts
include Astronaut Neil Armstrong, Astronaut Richard O. Covey, 38th
President of the United States Gerald R. Ford, Aviator/Adventurer
Steve Fossett, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Astronaut James
Lovell, Mr. J.W. "Bill" Marriott, Jr., former Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld, Academy Award-winning Director Steven Spielberg,
founder of Wal-Mart, Sam Walton, former Secretary Togo D. West, Jr.,
and 19th Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., USN
(ret.).
Mr. Marshburn was nominated for the honor and rank of Distinguished
Eagle Scout by the Scout Executive, Mr. Michael Johnson, and the
President, Dr. Reid Parrott, of East Carolina Council, BOY SCOUTS OF
AMERICA, Kinston, North Carolina, acting on behalf of the executive
board of the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.
