John,
Bob's idea is good as far as it goes but, Saybrook currently has
separate people handling the database/roster uploads and the M/M
submissions. I, for one, would be very reluctant to further burden
our hard-working roster and DB2000 guru (many ongoing thanks to 'our'
Bob W.).
I suppose the Merit Mark files could be transferred from one computer
to another but, there again, a problem arises when you get someone,
on either end, who is less than handy at digging files out of their
hiding place and putting them back in the right place on a different
machine. Not to mention the prospect of an email client or ISP
flagging the attached file as Spam or otherwise undesirable material.
I won't name names but, isn't AOL famous for this?
I don't know how big a can of worms it would be to limit the number
of name/certificate numbers per squadron that could use the updater
password, allowing Bob Payette's idea to work but with more than one,
if necessary, person having use of that password and yet holding a
lid on rampant access if the password was passed around.
Just my thoughts, Barclay
