[Psml] What's in a name? -- Boating School & Club!

OK folks, I have kept out of this so but now seems like a good time to get
in.

I'm unclear as to how anyone thinks changing the name will help us get
recognition by the public. Right now there are people who recognize USPS
and what we do. Those are folks who have had some contact with us and
remember us as a result. There are also folks out there who know nothing
about us and when they see the initials USPS it means nothing to them.
Changing the name of the organization will not change that. The folks who
know us will still know us and respect what we do and the folks who know
nothing about us will still know nothing about us. They will not recognize
the name United States Power Squadron or United States Power and Sail or any
other name. People recognize and respect USPS because they have had some
contact or favorable experience with us and because of that they remember us

We need to get over the idea that changing the name will solve any of the
problems. If we solve the problems then the recognition problem will take
care of itself.

If we need to change and If we wish to keep our domain address intact
and initials the same, why not something as simple and straightforward as
United States Power and Sail". The subtitle "America's Boating Club" would
compliment it nicely on literature and web-sites. (We then only need be
concerned when kayakers or canoers get as concerned as sailors regarding the
name, as they neither use sail nor traditionally thought of power.)

We really don't need to get complicated. If we do a really good job
of what we set out to do, the name will not keep people away. Take Google or
Yahoo for example!
