Ed,

You might take a look at the Squadron Job Guide for further guidance.
>From personal experience of a from a three time commander - I would take
the planning committee, and let the Silver Trident etc. do special
projects.

Richard

After reviewing the description of the Annapolis Power Squadron's Silver
Trident Society, I looked up the description of a Squadron Planning
Committee - see below.

The Annapolis Squadron Silver Trident Society:
"Embedded within the Squadron is the Silver Trident Society, an
informal
group of Past Commanders who meet quarterly to provide the Squadron
with a
Board of Advisors and to assist with Special Projects to advance the
mission
of Boating Safety through Boater Education."

Excerpt from the March 2008 Squadron Model Bylaws:
"5.8.1 The Planning Committee...shall study matters concerning the
general welfare of this squadron and make recommendations thereon to
the
Executive Committee. Items for study may be referred to it by the
commander,
the Executive Committee or the membership, or may arise within the
Planning
Committee itself."

It looks like the Annapolis Power Squadron's Silver Trident Society is
an
informal version of a Squadron Planning Committee. Is that a fair
statement?

My purpose is not to judge one over another, that is up to each squadron
to
decide, but rather to point out the similarities between each group.

Cape Fear recently revised its bylaws and included a new section about a
Squadron Planning Committee, based on the new Model Bylaws. I'd like to
hear from squadrons that already have Planning Committees, or Silver
Trident Societies, and I'd like to know how affective these groups have
been?

The input would be a great help and much appreciated.
