Henry,
Another possibility (I have personally experienced) is wasps or other  
critters nesting in the horn. If the mud packs up against the  
diaphragm, no horn. Take a good look up the throat with a good light  
and a little water, air, or judicious stick wiggling and the problem  
may be solved.
