[Psml] Acer Aspire Computers

I bought one over the holidays and have been very happy with it as far as
portability is concerned, and it is pretty fast. Comes with an XP operating
system so it is not all hogged down with Vista's overhead. The Acer version
I bought was about $350 and has 1 GB RAM and a 140 GB hard drive (advertised
as 120 GB, but it comes up as 140). The HP version has less RAM (only 512
MB on the models I looked at) and it does NOT have a conventional hard
drive, rather has flash memory like a USB thumb drive, and only 8 or 16 GB,
so storage is VERY limited on what you can put on it. Neither model comes
with an optical drive, so to load software from CD or DVD media, you have to
have an external CD/DVD drive to hook up to it, but the good news is these
can be had for less than $75 and it is something you don't have to lug
around with you all the time. The Aspire I have has 3 USBs plus some card
reader capability and it does have external monitor port so you can drive a
projector with it. It also has built in wireless G.

I'm currently in the last stages of taking JN and have all the powerpoint
slides, quizzes and homework loaded on it along with a full Office version,
and I still have over 110 GB free on the hard drive. Screen is a bit small
so viewing some of the JN plots on the slides can be a bit taxing to older
eyes, but I still use it right on my desk as I'm working JN problems.
Battery life is quite good, typically well over 2 hours on a charge, since
it does not have the optical drive to eat up the electrons.

We are considering the purchase of an acer aspire computer to run power
point for our classes. What experience has anyone had with these new mini
computuers?
HP has a similar unit on the marker. Any comments please'
