While I understand the reticence of members to give out their personal
contact information, this should really be a non-issue. With providers like
GMail, Hotmail Yahoo and AOL additional addresses are free. The only "cost" is
reading the email and throwing SPAM into the bit-bucket. Why wouldn't you
want to respond to someone who wants your product? The case of phone
numbers is a little more involved, but no big deal. We have experimented
successfully with a gismo called MagicJack, available at _www.magicjack.com_
(http://www.magicjack.com) , Radio Shack, and other stores for around $40.00 and
it costs $20 per year after the first year.. It hooks up to the USB jack on
your computer for the initial setup. Although sold as a way to make
unlimited phone calls, it comes with a dedicated phone number for incoming calls.
Thus, you do not have to give out your own phone number. The neat thing
about it is that once set up, the computer doesn't even have to be on (in
fact you can even remove the software from your computer) and calls will go to
voice mail with your own incoming announcement message. If you want to see
how it works, call our number at 631-824-3898. It even forwards a .WAV
file to your designated email account. I understand that Google will be
rolling out a similar Internet based service. Bottom line - you can interact with
the public using both email and telephone without compromising your
privacy. There is no excuse not to be out there.
