[Psml] Aluminum Hose Barb Question

Hello All,

Having just installed two new aluminum tanks I was advised by the builder of
the tanks and reading Alcoa's Data sheets not to have brass or any copper
content in direct contact with the tank the advised using either aluminum
fittings or stainless steel. I used stainless bushings then with stainless
elbows with a bronze hose barb worked great hose went on without much
effort. On the fill side same setup same was used except a toe 3" bushing
was used and double clamped. By the way the toe bushing was the way the file
was built by the original manufacture. I was shown a tank that was cut out
of late model 48 Italian boat that use brass fitting and it was corroded all
the way through. I had to be cut out in sections and duplicated to fit back
into an odd shaped area on the boat. Also it is advised not to have the tank
in direct contact with any porous material that could hold moisture in
direct contact with the tank. I used epoxy paint to coat the stringers.
There is on the Web an article with pictures of one tank replacement and
they used starboard glued to the bottom off the tank. Bottom line thou I
would recommend not having any copper containing alloy metal in direct
contact with the tank.

Try beveling the inside diameter of the hose.

I would also be careful with the aluminum fittings. They
are frequently a casting, which is much more brittle than
a machined fitting - the casting is more likely to fail
unexpectedly. A good brass fitting should not have any
problems with the aluminum tank.

Just a reminder - don't forget to use two hose clamps! 8^)

Subject: [Psml] Aluminum Hose Barb Question

Greetings!
I am installing an aluminum fuel tank and want to use aluminum
hose barbs. The problem seems to be that the aluminum hose barb for
3/8 inch ID hose is a "little big" for the hose. My brass 3/8 inch
hose barbs fit the fuel hose quite nicely but I would rather use the
aluminum hose barbs. Any suggestions as to how to get the 3/8 inch
ID hose to slide on the aluminum barbs?
