Subject: [Itcom-l] Off Station--update

Good morning all,

Thanks to all who wrote expressing support. I owe you an update.

Multiple heart bypass surgery was performed last Wednesday, 4 April,
followed by two days in ICU. Returned home from Miami Beach by car on
Tuesday. I had at least three essentially blocked arteries, and from the
medical report, it seems that multiple bypasses and reattachments were
performed. (Apparently, there was evidence that my heart had created some of

its own bypasses, or I would have had serious symptoms much earlier.)

I was unaware of all this until a few weeks ago, when I noticed some chest
pain during our two-mile daily walks. Doctor said "Classic Angina." I find
it interesting that a resting EKG was normal. A stress test showed serious
problems, and three days later I was off to Mt Sinai Medical Center for
whatever was needed to fix me up.

Doctors say that I have recovered more rapidly than most because of my
basically good physical condition, with none of the major, and often
frequent, complicating conditions---overweight, diabetes, and smoking. They
report that my heart is undamaged, normal size, all valves functioning
properly, and I should have a full recovery. In six to eight weeks my
activities will be essentially unlimited. Meanwhile, I am not even allowed
to drive a car, but I am up and about, doing some exercises and walking a
quarter mile twice daily.

Lois was with me the whole time, and was probably having a harder time of it

than I was. Fortunately, our son and daughter were able to alternate visits
and provided tremendous support to keep her going.

I am watching the e-mail, and responding where appropriate, but plan to stay

away from the day-to-day Committee activity for a few more weeks. John
Bradley remains in charge.

Best regards, Phil
