As I briefed at the potluck last night our squadron has committed to support this very worthy cause. This is the letter I received from the Foundation:
Dear Bill,
As you probably know our June 2nd annual event to take the kids out for boat rides was postponed due to a bad weather day. We have rescheduled for August 25th, to run boats out of Ft. Desoto and Caladesi Island docks. We are in search of about eight volunteers total to help handle lines on the respective docks and discuss with the kids proper marine safety rules when onboard. We have been very fortunate to have found sponsors who have donated USCG approved life jackets for each kid as well.
If you think any of the Power Squadron members would be willing to help with this State declared day of "Take A Kid Boating" outing please let us know. Again, these are orphaned children who are hopeful of being adopted. Representation by the local Power Squadron's would be greatly appreciated. A picnic lunch is also supplied for all at each location. Needles to say the kids were disappointed with the postponement however now are once again getting excited to spend a day with everyone.
My best,
Pete Bradshaw
Specifics: Event is on Saturday, 25 August, 0930-1400. The Foundation is providing boats, chaperones, life jackets, free entrance to Honeymoon Island, reduced (or free) rates for the Caladesi Island Ferry and a free lunch.
All that is needed from us is:
- 4-6 line handlers/safety briefers at Ft. Desoto boat ramp on Saturday, 25 August, 0930-1400. Boats can only be tied to docks for a short time requiring kids to be briefed and then escorted to the docks for quick loading.
- 4 line handlers/safety briefers at the Caladesi Island docks on Saturday, 25 August, 0930-1400.
I NEED YOUR COMMITMENT NOW BY RESPONDING TO THIS EMAIL. For those who sign-up more information will be provided as it is received. Anyone interested in taking their boats to Caladesi for the weekend?
Bill
