Today I discovered something that gave me great pause - - The emails we send
to the SPSPS Distribution list can be found when using one of the internet
search engines!

Periodically, I search on my own name to see what comes up. Usually, I find
a copy of an article written by Helen Hunt of the St. Pete Times and a few
other sites that do not have anything to do with me. But, today, I used
Yahoo! search and it found an email stored at National that was sent to the
distribution list in 2004!

But, that is NOT the bad part.

I had sent this email to several of my friends, warning them of an email
scam. As I normally do, I included my name and both my home and cell phone
numbers. One of my friends forwarded the email, WITHOUT REMOVING MY PERSONAL
NUMBERS, to the entire distribution list. At the time, I thought nothing of
it. But, today, when I searched using Yahoo!, up came that email WITH ALL MY
PERSONAL NUMBERS, available for anyone who happened to be looking for me!

Am I advising that you stop sending important information to Squadron
members via the distribution list? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

But, I AM advising that you be exceptionally careful of the information you
include when constructing an email for the distribution list, especially if
you do not want your personal information generally available.

I would also recommend that, if you choose to forward any emails that you
received from others, you PURGE THEIR PERSONAL INFORMATION BEFORE you send
it. Otherwise, YOU are exposing THEIR personal information for anyone to
find.

Thanks.
