COME BUILD OYSTER DOMES WITH US!


If you are looking for a hands-on way to get involved in protecting and restoring our bay, then oyster domes are for you! Plan on getting wet, doing some heavy lifting, but most of all...having lots of FUN! It takes about 5-8 volunteers to build 13 domes. This is a great way to spend your morning! The majority of our project dates are filled in January, but we still need volunteers on the following dates:
Thursday, January 24
Monday, January 28
Thursday, January 31

Time: 9:30 - 1:00 each day

Where: Tampa Bay Watch Offices, 3000 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde, FL

What to wear/bring: Wear closed toe shoes and plan on getting dirty! Water, gloves, etc...will be provided

Tampa Bay Watch is rapidly approaching Derelict Crab Trap removal season, but we need your help! We are looking for derelict crab trap sightings throughout the bay area.
What is a Derelict Crab Trap?
A derelict crab trap is:
?        Any trap found in the water during closed season for that species
?        Any fishable trap during open season that lacks at least three of the following: buoy, line, current trap tag, current commercial saltwater products license.
If derelict traps are found, do NOT remove them.  Instead, record location of the trap either on a GPS or chart and any other pertinent information, then call Tampa Bay Watch to report your findings. Tomorrow night is the big night!   We will be learning more about DB2000 at
the Sail Center at 7:00 pm.  We will be covering; how to use it effectively
to perform your jobs within the squadron, how to sort fields, find
information, use tags, build data files, print labels, and build user fields
are going to be taught.  You can bring our laptop if you want but bring an
extension cord if you don't think your battery will last 2 hours.  Also
bring paper and pen to take notes - no handouts will be given.

Hello to all USPS members
 
A training session has been set up for the evening of January 30th,  
Wednesday, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  This training session SPSPS  members a briefing 
on all of the various Coop Charting programs.  This will  include training for 
getting on various web sites for submitting reports,  gathering data, updating 
boating informational web sites.  The training  will take place at the Sail 
Center were most SPSPS training is held.
 
After attending this session new members should be able to start on  various 
programs within the Coop Charting area.  Some of the programs  that require 
more in-depth site surveys may still require further training and  possibly on 
the water sessions.  Many of our programs require the use of a  GPS so if you 
know the model number please bring that information to the  training.  If you 
have a laptop that you will be using for doing  reports you can bring it to the 
session so that you can load any  programs and web site addresses if we have 
enough time.
 
Please send me a reply E-Mail letting me know if you will be able to attend  
this training session.

Now that we have just begun a new watch year, it seems appropriate to send
this email.

 

.         The distribution list works a bit differently than your normal
email and does not expect any other email addresses in the TO, CC, or BCC
areas. When there are additional addresses, even if it is only a few, the
message may be "pended" with an error indicating that there are too many
recipients or that you have used explicit addresses. So, if you DO need to
send to other addresses, send one email where the distribution list address
is the ONLY address on the email. Then, for the other "explicit" addresses,
send a second email.

 

.         When preparing an email, consider its size. Emails that exceed 30
KB are "pended" and require the administrator (me) to log on and release
them. Adding an attachment, graphic, or photo may cause the email to exceed
the limit, so please check the size before sending. This email, by way of
example, is only 3 KB. (In Outlook, while you are working on an email, a
copy is stored in the DRAFT folder. You can look there at any time to see
the size. For other email systems, consult your appropriate Help files.)

 

.         When building the subject line, remove any "RE:" or "FW:"
characters that may have resulted from replying/forwarding another message.
This lets the recipients know that the message is truly from you. And, if
you ARE forwarding information, ALWAYS ADD a personal message.

 

.         To send a message to the distribution list, prepare an email as
you usually would and address it to "stpete at usps.org". The distribution list
will do the rest.

 

.         All emails to the distribution list are stored on a server at
National and are available for review at any time. Unfortunately, however,
they are also "exposed" to the entire web as well. Therefore, when preparing
an email, stop and think about any personal information you may be including
(address, phone, etc.) If you are FORWARDING an email from someone else,

It is always nice to share things with your spouse. It is not nice to share  
the mother of  all chest colds. It all started the day of the COW. By that  
night she was out of action and by Tuesday I was in bad shape.
We will reschedule the Ve class for some time in February. ( that's if I am  
still alive). Glenn

Just a reminder that Coop-Charting training class will begin at 07:00PM on  
Wednesday, January 30th.  Spouses of Coop-Charting members are welcome to  
attend since several of the activities require two persons to accomplish them,  it 
would be helpful if you know what is expected.  Hopefully this will  prepare 
you to start nautical surveys on your trip to Marina Jacks this  coming 
weekend.

Tampa Bay Watch Announces "A Day on the Bay" Ecotour Course

?A Day on the Bay? is an exciting new community course component of Tampa Bay Watch?s expanding Estuary EDventures education programs. This course is designed specifically for Tampa Bay Watch members, family groups and annual visitors to the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Tampa Bay area. The environmental program starts with a classroom orientation of the estuary and then spends the rest of the day on the bay. This hands-on field trip experience includes an introduction to Tampa Bay Watch, discovering estuarine sea critters from our on-site touch-tanks and kayaking over oyster bars and through mangrove forests.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o />
The course encompasses subjects/activities including: an overview of Tampa Bay Estuary habitats, its flora and fauna, bay impacts and restoration projects.  Tampa Bay Watch?s Marine and Education Center, located on the Tampa Bay shoreline directly across from Ft. De Soto, provides an easy access toTampa Bay.  We hope that both on-site and in the field, participants learn about our beautiful yet fragile surroundings in a fun and engaging way.
Ecotours will occur each Wednesday starting Feb. 6th ? March 26th from 11:00am - 3:00pm
***Each ecotour course must have minimum of ten people for the tour to take place.***
Tuition for course:Adults: Members= $20 & Non-members= $25Kids: (ages 8-16) = $15, includes a free membership
Youngsters: (ages 5-7) = Free

Build Oyster Domes in February!

<?xml:namespace prefix = v /><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->
Oyster domes are constructed onsite Tampa Bay Watch by pouring marine friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold containing a large round buoy surrounded by smaller rubber balls, creating the holes in the oyster domes. Microsilica is mixed with the concrete to balance the pH so oysters are attracted to the domes. It takes about 5-8 volunteers to build 13 domes in one morning. 
***Please be advised that if it is raining or if the temperature is below 60 degrees to call Chris Sutton at Tampa Bay Watch 727-867-8166 to make sure the project will still occur since these conditions are not conducive to the hardening of concrete.***

Volunteers with Boats Are Needed for Gasparilla Manatee Watch on Saturday, January 26
The mission of the Gasparilla Manatee Watch is to protect the endangered West Indian manatee during the Pirate Invasion marine parade. The watch has expanded to include whales, dolphins and marine turtles. Volunteers will meet at the Davis Islands Boat Ramp at 8:00am on Saturday, January 26 to be briefed on the day?s events, any last minute changes, expected conditions and communications. Observers will be assigned positions and issued radios, maps, log sheets and warning signs. 

At around 9:00am the group will depart to the observation points to start our preliminary survey of the area.  The event usually goes from 8am to 2pm and the parade is scheduled to start at 11:30am and make landfall around 1:30pm. During this time any animal sightings will be reported and assets will be directed to protect the manatees as needed.  After the parade, radios will be collected, etc. and you will be released to enjoy the festivities or run away quickly as you see fit.
The weather can be unpredictable during this time of year and it will be cooler on the water so dress in layers. Items to bring with you: polarized sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, cell phone (for back up communication), drinks, snacks & camera.
To get to the boat ramp use this address ?1315 Severn Ave. Tampa, FL 33606?.  Signs will be up once you get near the ramp to direct you to us. For those bringing boats there will be a high tide around 5:45am and the low will be around 11:45am.  The boat ramp is shallow and gets busy so you may want to put in before the meeting. 
This event attracts close to 500,000 people to the Bayshore area and the roads get congested and many are closed for the event.  The City?s event website will have up to date information on road closures.
