below is a response to an article in the latest ensign on wiring. If you want to work on wiring take the Marine electronics course. Don't do what the ensign article suggests

Subject: May/Jun 2009 Ensign Article on Wire Splicing
Gene,
I read in horror the article in this months Ensign on Wire Splicing by David Osmolski. The errors are not only appalling violations of ABYC standards (and the MES course), but are downright dangerous. He describes three methods:
· Wire Nuts (specifically banned by ABYC),
· plastic butt spices (nylon is required, vinyl is not approved), and
· soldering (solder alone is not approved, but must be supplemented with other mechanical connection).
Additionally the figure at the top of the article shows an unapproved crimping tool (non ratchet), vinyl butt splices, and wire nuts.
Im not sure how articles like this get published without proper review. I actually fear for our members who may read it, think that since it is in the Ensign it must be correct, and end up with a fire or explosion on board.
How can we counter the dissemination of this dangerous misinformation? I dont think that a correction in the next issue (3 months from now) is adequatewe need to do something stronger and sooner.
Jeff
