[ve-l] EPIRBs and Education

I would think that any and all educational tidbits we can pass along
would be welcomed by our (boating) public. Of course we need to
tailor the info to the boater, no need to instruct a skiff fisherman
on EPIRB regs., but certainly let him/her know about the importance
of VHF/DSC over cellphone.
The EPIRB regs. can also be mentioned during the VHF/DSC and GPS
seminars. Maybe have (abbreviated) copies of the electronics nav.
rules to hand out? The "GMDSS for Recreational Boaters" pamphlet
touches on EPIRBs but doesn't mention any regs. other than
registration, but I'm sure there are other publications that do (or
someone might cook up a short PDF handout that does?).

A lot of the electronic technology is changing now, the FCC is
finally getting off their collective rumps and acting on many of the
items that have been languishing for a year or more, so hopefully our
RTCM liaison(s) will be keeping us informed as things happen (still
no word on the fate of Loran, since the US budget is still in
question), and we can then pass the word on to J.Q. Boater.

On another note: I received our (Saybrook Squadron's) 2007 decals in
today's mail. A lovely pea-green if I do say so!
Now if any kayakers are out on New Years day we can kick the year off
right!

Happy Holidays All, may the New Year bring fair winds, easy seas and
few hurricanes to our shores,
Barclay
