Dave and All,
Before you go to look at one of these kits, or any other questionable
items, print out the applicable page of the' Code of Federal
Regulations'.
You can get there from <www.uscgboating.org>, click 'Regulations then
'Title 33' then the applicable part i.e.: 125-199, and then the
appropriate subpart.
They are all available as 'text' or 'pdf' files, so view whichever is
easiest for you. Then print the page so the store manager can see that
what we are saying is actually the rules.
Alternatively, you can go directly to the US-CFR page at:
<http://www.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/cfrassemble.cgi?title=200433>
As a side note, I carry an abbreviated copy of this reg. and others in
my VSC kit to show the occasional boater that I speak truthfully when I
say "no you can't put the numbers on your pilothouse window" or some
such. It doesn't make them any happier about having to screw a number
board to the hull or cabin side of their boat, but at least it's not
"because I said so".
Didn't you just hate that when mom said it, oh those many years ago!
