Alert - Alert - Alert
All VEs,
Your assistance is requested in notifying the boating public about this
EPIRB phase out. Though this is a discussion item only and not a requirement
for issuing the decal. All Vessel Examiners are requested to educate the
public over the next two years. If a recreational vessel has either 121.5 or
the 243 EPIRBs onboard. They can remain onboard for the two years, but would
highly recommend Owner/operators to convert over to the new 406 EPIRBs as
soon as they can. They should also know not to be test the old devices for
any reason. The FCC has a penalty in place for testing the old EPIRBs. The
Coast Guard will still come out and find you within this two-year window.
