For those of you who received my earlier message about modifications to the
USPS server, the following message will give you all the details. You will
probably receive this message from several sources. Bear with us as we want
everyone who could be affected to get the information.
Bill Miller
Website Coordinator, USPS
Message follows.
The USPS server is moving to substantially faster, larger, and more reliable
hardware. Beginning on Saturday, 16 September, at approximately 1200 EDT,
ITCOM will begin capturing all data on the current server. Beginning at that
time, you should not make ANY changes to ANY type of data stored on the
server. If you do, it will most probably not be moved to the new server and
consequently will become unavailable shortly thereafter. At roughly 2300 EDT of
the same day, ITCOM will begin loading the captured data onto the new server.
Ba*** on the timing delay involved in propagating a domain location throughout
the various internet domain name servers, the address _WWW.USPS.ORG_
(http://www.usps.org/) will be unreliable (may retrieve the old or the new site)
from Friday the 15th through Monday the 17th, and at various times during that
period may return a site unknown message.
We expect service will be totally unavailable during the several hours
around Midnight of the 16th. However, continued tweaking of some applications
might be required through Monday. We would appreciate your cooperation in not
attempting to reference the site during this period. We will advise when we
believe all is well.
Please note: The period before the 15th might be a good opportunity to
ensure that your off-line backups are up-to-date.
Sorry if you receive multiple copies of this message. We are trying to send
it many different ways, in order to help assure that those who need it will
see it.
