Not sure who this should be addressed to, Jeff or Glen, so will make it a
blanket response. The webawards program is provided to stimulate activity in
the developement of websites. It is not a mandatory program and if the
local webmaster does not care to participate they need to do nothing. A
group of volunteers visit all websites that have an active link to the list
of squadrons on the USPS website on Sept 1. Some webmasters have elected to
do their own thing and may or may not be recognized for their efforts at the
end of the evaluation period. All scores are posted just in case someone is
interested in how they did. No listing is made showing all scores for those
who did not meet the basic requirements. So if you dont care for the
program forget it.
The changes this year are being made to simplfy some of the more mundane
items such as the disclaimer, privacy and trademark links. If you really
care what they say it is an easy matter to click on the link of interest and
read the latest. Most people do not care and leave those details up to
someone else who has the responsibility to assure the wording is the latest
for the changing times. The problem reach a point where the trademark
statements being used by some websites totally missed the point. Thus the
decision to make the link the defacto standard. Most of the websites follow
this procedure.
The suggestion that a page of logos and graphics be provided is a great one
and it is being developed and should be available within a week or so. All
webmasters subscribed to the USPS-webmasters mail list and ITContacts of
record at USPS will be advised when and where it is available.
Jeff, it is easy to be critical of the volunteers who have spent endless
hours trying to improve the status of the websites that represent USPS. If
you feel you can do better please complete the USPS resume form at
http://www.usps.org/national/comnom/resume.htm We would be happy to have
someone with your capabilities helping us with these programs. Get involved
with more than a " I am one of the most vocal opponents" of the program.
Hope this adequately explains the situation.

Well said, Glen. I share your frustration with the national ITCom,
especially as it relates to our web sites. They seem much more interested in
enforcing their own rules and objectives than in helping squadron and
district webmasters. My squadron and district sites consistently win Website
awards, but I am one of the most vocal opponents of the award program
because it does more to drive volunteer webmasters always than it does to
encourage/help them. We've now lost three because of their irritation with
the program. Until the powers-to-be in the ITCom change, I don't have much
optimism for any positive change.

If we have a group email for webmasters, why can't ITCom send out new
graphics that should be used, the new VSC sticker when it is available,
changes to trademark, disclaimer or privacy statements when they are updated
and more? We have a way to share information, but we never share any, just
instructions about what webmasters should include without resources. I do
not link to the national privacy, disclaimer or trademark pages, because
these statements cover USPS, but do no have any phrasing that specifically
includes our local squadron. Our pages take the national statements and
include our squadron name as well so we are covered locally. Now you are
telling us that we must use the national links so we can always be up to
date on any changes, but won't offer the option of notifying us when changes
are made. We should use the new Americas Boating Club graphic, but you don't
send it attached to the email, or even offer a link where we can download a
good version of it. Is sharing information that hard? If you want webmasters
to update with new information or graphics, PROVIDE IT!
