America's Boating Course - 3rd Edition

You must pre-register by September 1, 2010 with the Squadron Education Officer, Raymond Paul at cscout01@earthlink.net.  The Class will cost $50.00 per person; $100.00 with membership.   If multiple students in the same family, adjustments in fees can be made.

Paperwork for the class will be filled out at 6:30 on the first night of the course.  Classes will run from 7 – 9 PM for 5 consecutive weeks.

Syllabus

Session 1 will cover Boat Terms; Types of Powerboat Hulls; Types of Boats; Life Jackets; Fire Extinquishers; Visual Distress Signals; Operator’s Responsibilities; Check the Boat and Equipment; Fueling; Preparing to Cast Off; Getting Underway; While Underway; Boating Courtesy.

Session 2 will cover International Rules; Inland Rules; Copies of the Rules; General Rule of Responsibility; General Definitions; Responsibilities between Vessels; Steering and Sailing Rules; Marks; Lateral System; Non-Lateral System; Numbers & Letters; Lighted Marks; Sound Signals; Variations to U.S. System; Types of Navigation Lights; Day Shapes; Sound Signals; Boat Registration; Documentation; Homeland Security; Boating Safety; Law Enforcement; Environmental Considerations; Accident Reporting; PFD Requirements; Required Equipment; Licensing; Noise Levels; Waste Discharge; Speed and Hours of Operation; Accident Reporting; OUI; PWC Regulations; Additional Regulations; Registrations; Continuing Education.

Session 3 will cover Charts and Maps; Piloting; Electronic Navigation; Anchoring Equipment; Anchoring Techniques; Emergencies; Adverse Conditions; Radio vs. Telephone; VHF Radio.

Session 4 will cover Special Equipment; Know the Waters; Night Activity; What to do in an Emergency; Check Weather before Departure; Waterskiing; Fishing and Hunting; Diving and Snorkeling; Paddle Sports; Hypothermia; Propeller Strikes; Boat Trailers; The Tow Vehicle; Hitching Systems; Before You Leave; Trailer Operations; Launching; Hauling-Out; Sailboat Trailering; Trailer Maintenance; Theft Protection; Characteristics of PWCs; How a PWC Works; Special PWC Regulations; Navigation Rules; PWC Safety; Considerate, Responsible Operation; Types of Rope; The Cleat Hitch; The Bowline; Coiling a Line.

Session 5: will Review the material from the first 4 sessions and the specific state rules covered by the Exam.  There will be a NASBLA test of 50 questions and 10 California State Questions.  In order to receive you certificate you will need 80% correct on both sections of the test.

If any of the students would like to continue with introduction of Charting and Piloting, it will be presented in additional sessions for those who pass the test.
