Squadron Burgee Heraldry:
Our squadron is located over 100 miles from any major body of water, namely the Great Lakes or the Ohio River. In our early days our location led to questioning as to the reason or need for our existence locally. One wiseacre quipped, "They are just a group of cornfield sailors". An idea was born. P/C John E. Wyttenbach, N served as Commander during the 1956-57 Watch Year and roughed out the design for our burgee. The outline of the State of Indiana in yellow is symbolic of the soil, the shock of corn in the upper half signifying a cornfield, and the cruiser in the lower portion splashing around in the water puddle designating us as Cornfield Sailors. The red H identifies us as Hoosiers. P/C Otto J. Kern proceeded to finalize our design from the rough sketch to the present artwork.. It might be of interest to know that it is now registered by Lloyd’s of London thru the effort of P/C William Fletcher Patterson, Sr.
