Vessel Safety Checks

The mission of both the United States Power Squadron® and the Coast Guard Recreational Boating Safety Program is to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage, and negative environmental impact associated with the use of recreational boats, through preventive means. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program supports one of the Power Squadron / Coast Guard goals: "Safer Boating".

The VSC program helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal, state, and local recreational boating safety laws, particularly regarding the carriage of safety equipment. It is a free check of vessel's equipment. Some of the items we check for are:

During Vessel Safety Check, the vessel examiner has an opportunity to discuss with a fellow boater the purpose of the marine safety equipment and to answer any boating-related safety questions. Some topics which are discussed are:

Since boating in Florida is a year round activity, members of the Safety Vessel Check Team are available to meet the boating public whenever they are requested. During Safe Boating Week, we normally have a few examiners available at the city ramp in downtown Fort Myers.
