Valley Ho Power Squadron

4th of July Fish Fry Cruise This Cruise is scheduled for the holiday weekend of the 4th of July, usually at the NAACP Isle Marina in Channel Islands Harbor. Valley Ho Squadron members with boats may cruise out to Santa Cruz Island in the early morning on Saturday to catch such fish as they are able for the evening’s fish fry. If these gallant hunters are unsuccessful in their quest, a contingent from the Squadron will make a foray into the town of Oxnard to “catch” sufficient fish at a local market. The fish are properly cleaned and filleted and then cooked on a portable barbecue on the dock with, additional meal components provided by Valley Ho Squadron members or Sea Gals, all for a nominal charge to each participant to cover the member costs. Attendees, of course, may bring libations for themselves and to share with any who may have forgotten to bring any. Each attendee is expected to provide their own portable chairs, while laps and dock boxes may serve as tables. Some Valley Ho Squadron members may bring their boats to the Channel Islands Harbor to stay on board over the long holiday weekend, while many other Valley Ho Squadron members and friends come only for the one day and evening of the fish fry. The Annual Fish Fry held July 5th 2003 at Anacapa Isle Marina in Oxnard was another success. Even though we were small in number (11) we had lots of great dishes along with our freshly fried fish. Speaking of fish, we received it graciously from ”the unknown fisherman” whose boat is docked on the same size as Kay and Dan Holland’s boat. I’m told that this person loves to fish, but doesn’t like to eat it. The Hollands had given us fish a couple of other times from our mysterious man. Only one boat ventured out to fish, The Go Nat with Nat Goldberg and Lou Gladser aboard. They ventured out to the back side of Anacapa Island and caught one huge Scullpin, but Nat says “You should have seen the one that got away.” The weather was perfect, extremely good for Oxnard and it was 1930 before we started clearing the dock and said our goodbyes—a good time was had by all.
