Installing Plot Tools on Windows Vista The Plot Tools installation program is not compatible with Windows Vista, but the program itself will work fine following a few extra manual steps to complete the installation process. First download Plot Tools from the USPS web site and unzip the file to a temporary location. We suggest that you create a folder called "C:\Temp" and use that. Then double-click on the "SETUP" file to install the program. You will be challenged on security grounds. Indicate your approval. The installation will fail midway, reporting that it cannot install the file "COMMDLG.DLL". That is because a newer version of that file already exists on your system, and because Vista does not permit installation programs to copy files to system folders at will. Unfortunately, that error causes the rest of the installation process to abort. Because the installation process aborted, you will need to complete the following steps manually: Copy the following files from the temporary location to which they were unzipped to the installation directory ("C:\PLOTTOOL" by default): MANUAL.DOC README.TXT VER.DLL Copy the following file to "C:\Windows\System": VBRUN300.DLL Vista will challenge you on security grounds. Indicate your approval. Now you will need to create a startup icon on your desktop. * Right-click on your desktop * Select "New", then "Shortcut" * Browse to "C:\PLOTTOOL\PLOTTOOL" and click "Next". The browsing sequence will be something like this: "Computer | OS (C:) | PLOTTOOL | PLOTTOOL". * Click "OK", then "Next", then "Finish". You will now be able to start up Plot Tools by double-clicking on the PLOTTOOL desktop icon.
