Web Ring Alternative

Over the past year it has become more difficult to communicate with the owners of Web Ring. Coupled with the latest commercial venture of the Web Ring, which its' cost at the expense of member sites being inundated with pop-up and pop-under advertising, it has been decided to drop USPS participation in the Web Ring venture.

Bob Payette, who volunteered recently to attempt to recover the USPS Web Ring, has an alternate solution, which I encourage all to take advantage of. You can see an example of how it works.
(YOUR SQUADRON) Power Squadron is a unit of United States Power Squadrons® in District (YOUR DISTRICT).
Squadron Links
District Links
Many Districts and Squadrons have their own web sites. To visit any of these sites, and to learn more about the Power Squadron experience, use the links to the right. A new browser window will open for you.

Essentially, it is nothing more than another piece of code which will replace the Web Ring code on your pages. Using it will allow a visitor to your site to see the entire list of USPS Squadrons or Districts and choose what sites that they want to visit. And all without the overhead of advertising!

The preferred HTML code is shown below:
< !-- BEGIN USPS LINK BACK CODE -- >
< table align=center width=75% border=1 bordercolor=red >
< table align=center width=100% border=0 >
< th colspan=2 align=center > (YOUR SQUADRON) Power Squadron is a unit of United States Power Squadrons® in District (YOUR DISTRICT).
< /th >
< tr >
< td width=66% >

< td align=right valign=center >

< /tr >
< /table >
< /td >< /tr >< /table >
< !-- END USPS LINK BACK CODE -- >

Be sure to replace "(YOUR SQUADRON)" and "(YOUR DISTRICT)" with the correct information and delete any code linking your site to the Web Ring, as that will become a "dead link" shortly.

I am very hopeful that this will be something every Squadron and District webmaster will feel comfortable doing, so that we have universal participation. If that happens we will really have a national ring of sites, with no advertising going in and out, and a great resourse for boating education.
